Review : Cowboys Comedy
Buckle Up Your Boots And Saddle Up Your Stallions, Cardiff’s Hottest Comedy Night Is Here And We Cannot Recommend It Enough!
Last week we were kindly invited by Jose Fortuna ( Or Cowboy Jo as he was called in the show), the showrunner, promoter, and the fantastic host of Cowboys Comedy. At first, we were conflicted and slightly nervous, with many comedy nights nowadays arguably being somewhat cringe and underwhelming - but as soon as we walked in, we knew that this would be different - and by the end of the night, we were stood up dancing as if it were a western saloon.

The show consisted of 4 talented acts; Ana Toxin, Cave Lunch, Carrie Sauce and Mel Owen. From Drag Queens to Cabaret performers this definitely isn’t your average comedy night - And we are totally here for it. Each act felt so fresh because they were all completely different.
“It had us laughin' up a storm from sundown 'til Dawn”
One minute you’re watching a cabaret performer dressed as a cow, and the next you’re singing along to your favourite country music songs like Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring Of Fire’ and Beyonce’s ‘This Aint Texas’ - This felt so different to watching 5 people tell jokes one after the other.

However, this isn’t just a stage show, it’s an immersive experience. To the left of where we were sat were huge bags of money and piles of dynamite, along with lots of ‘Wanted’ posters all over the walls. It’s things like this that really transport you into the Wild West.
“This show was such a buck’in good time”
The host, Cowboy Jo, really knows how to put on a great show. From the moment he got on stage, we were hooked like cattle on a lasso. Throughout the show he interacted with the audience perfectly, bringing numerous members of the audience onto the stage, and leaving people wondering what will happen next. Through his mix of witty comedy along with elements from the slapstick genre, armed with a toy gun and a variety of hilarious sound effects he was the perfect host for a cowboy-themed comedy night.

The incredible Mel Owen, a rising star in the local comedy scene opened the night. She was comedy gold, her X-rated jokes explored all things from relationships to racist neighbours and everything in between, which was the perfect start to the Cowboys comedy night, giving us a taste of what to expect later in the show.
“Cowboy comedy will have you knee-slappin', belly-laughin' and everything in between - it’s a must see”
Another stand-out performance came from Cave Lunch, a comedian who we were previously unfamiliar with. His interactions with the audience were extremely quick-witted and had our belly aching from laughing so much. If you ever get the chance to see him perform we cannot recommend him enough.
Be warned, this comedy night is definitely not for younger audiences as underlined by the amazing Ana Toxin, who’s burlesque performance was unlike anything we had ever seen, the use of a voice-over, costume and props really helped push the narrative, and we were so impressed with her creativity throughout the act. And let’s not forget to mention it was pretty hilarious too. I think it’s fair to say our jaws were dropped the whole time.

Carrie Sauce was another highlight of the show, she closed the show in the best way possible. With a Country song singalong, which of course we absolutely loved. We thought it was really great how she fully immersed herself in the Cowboys Comedy Wild West theme, with a strong southern accent and a western inspired outfit.
We couldn’t believe this hidden gem was located at Revolutions Bar just opposite Cardiff Castle, making it the perfect start to a great night out - And for just £5 each you really can’t go wrong!
Thank you so much to Jose Fortuna for the invite, we had an amazing time and we can’t wait for the next show!
